From August 6 to August 10, as much as 514mm rain poured down on 32 villages in southern parts of Korea. Many villages were flooded for 10 days; 26 persons died; property damage reached nine hundred billion won.
Especially Hallim and Haman districts near the Nakdong River suffered extreme damage because the suddenly increased waters couldn't flow well. So the government proclaimed Extreme Flood Damage Zone on these areas and all the inhabitants had to evacuate.
The flood victims couldn't come out of despair easily; they lost all things overnight. What was more serious than property damage was the injury on their hearts. While volunteers gathered from all over the country, the volunteers of Church of God, World Mission Society also threw themselves into helping flood victims.
In Busan, over 1,800 members volunteered to restore Gimhae city and cleaned up Dadaepo Port. Besides, over 650 members from Masan, over 250 members from Bonghwa and over 200 members from International Voluntary Service Association of University Students, the 'Volunteers of Church of God' totaled 3,000 over all the country.
The volunteers of Church of God started their restoration work in Bonghwa on August 15, and helped flood victims in Hallim, Haman, Jinju, Jinhae and Saha in Busan from August 19 to 25.
Especially the university students from Seoul impressed the inhabitants and officials through their devotional service. An official in charge of social welfare of Gimhae city praised the volunteers, "All Gimhae city is surprised at the volunteers of Church of God. Not only their whole hearted and devotional works, but also the number of volunteers, which can't be compared with any other organization, surprises us."
